Physician Appreciation Day at Good Sam

March 29th, 2018

Superheroes are not just on the pages of comic books or the big screen. They are everyday heroes, like the doctors at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. These real-life heroes are dedicated to caring for our patients and saving lives each day.

These are just some of the notes of thanks that the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation has received from grateful patients recognizing members of our Medical Staff for the exceptional care that they provide!

Salvatore Zavarella, DO, Neurosurgery

“Dr. Zavarella is a fine surgeon who related to his patients very easily.”

“Dr. Zavarella performed neck surgery after I took a fall. From the start he was professional and knowledgeable. He was quite confident in his abilities as a surgeon and passed that confidence along to me, his patient. He was always willing to explain his procedures and the results were very good. He is a great doctor - before, during and after surgery. Thanks to his expertise, I am back to doing what I did before the fall.”

Barry Balot, MD, Internal Medicine

“My Dr. Balot is a dedicated professional doctor. He always takes that extra step futher to make me better. Every reference he has also given me are tops in my book. His son Dr. David Balot is also someone to follow in his father's footsteps and his son Michael will soon be on board. Dr. Balot has been my doctor for many years treating my diabetes and making sure I see the heart doctor, foot doctor, eye doctor, all the things to keep me healthy and make sure my diabetes isn't affecting my eyes, etc. If you look at my record I've been in Good Sam over the years and every doctor in the ER is also someone to praise. In 2007 I went to the emergency room. In 20 minutes my fever went up to 105. I was incoherent. I had sepsis because a stone had stuck in my bladder. I don't know who that doctor was, but I'm alive because of him. Thank you, the doctors of Good Sam.”

“A special thank you for keeping me healthy enough to enjoy an active, useful and happy life style in my very senior years.”

Manal Hegazy, MD, General Surgery

“Successful two times and one hundred times grateful.”

Sudhir Goyal, MD, Nephrology

“A dedicated doctor who is always giving his best for his patients - kind, gentle and always pleasant and professional.”

Justin Shaber, MD, Cardiology

“Everyone was great. Thank you!”

Anthony Guida, MD, Family Medicine

“We have been patients of Dr. Anthony Guida for over 30 years. He is a wonderful caring doctor who has dedicated his life to helping others and to making a difference in the patient's lives. He is very knowledgeable and a good diagnostic physician. We are fortunate to have him in our community and he has made a difference in our lives. For example, my husband's dabetic condition is stable.”

“You are more than just my Dr., you are the most wonderful friend I could have. Through the many years you have been my "first line of defence", always guiding me, taking care of me. "Thank you" doesn't say enough!”

Kevin Mullins, MD, Chief of Neurosurgery

“2013 & 2016 both discs of my husband’s were operated on by Dr. Mullins. Dr. Mullins explained the procedure in detail and answered all of our questions in a caring and professional manner. Follow up exams were on time and his friendly smile and caring nature made the experience a pleasure. We recommended a friend of ours who gave him rave reviews. My husband has had no problems ever since his surgery in 2013 & 2016 and enjoys the comfort of no pain. Kudos for a job well done! P.S. His staff runs the office in a professional manner and are ready to answer all our concerns! Congratulations! Keep up the good work! God Bless!”

Maksim Rovensky, MD, Cardiothoracic/Open Heart Surgery

“I am extremely grateful to Dr. Rovensky for his unbelievable skills that saved my life on December 15, 2017. The staff at the cardiology floor was also magnificent! My family and I most of all am extremely grateful. Keep the good work up!”

“We're very grateful for Dr. Rovensky. He's the greatest heart surgeon - very dedicated, patient, kind, and compassionate. My husband had triple bypass 2016. Thank God he's doing okay. God Bless Dr. Rovensky with good health to him and his family to continue this good work.”

Jeffrey Nakhjavan, DO, Family Medicine

“We wish to honor Dr. Jeffrey Nakhjavan on March 29, 2018 for "National Doctors' Day" at Good Sam Hospital. Dr. Nakhjavan is a very special physician. He genuinely cares for his patients. He is a good listener and a very supportive person. He is devoted to evaluating our illnesses and provides us with the proper medications. He uses reassuring words and answers our questions clearly and decisively. He deserves this Doctors' Day recognition. We feel lucky to have such a professional and understanding doctor. We are comfortable with him and would like to say thank you for all you do for us, Dr. Nakhjavan.”

Howard Hertz, MD, Internal Medicine

“I have known Dr. Howard Hertz since he came to Babylon. He is not only our physicians, but as we tell everyone, he is our hero. My friend had very serious medical problems, and he, along with his son, Dr. Jared, saved her life. We will never forget the wonderful, heart warming care they gave her at Good Samaritan Hospital and after care when she came home. We thank God for having them as our physicians. We were fortunate to have Dr. Hormozi and Dr. Francfort as additional physicians that again, gave her great care. Thanks to all for saving my friend.”

“Thank you!”

NICU Doctors and Nurses

“I have two children and they were both in the NICU. I thank all the doctors and nurses for taking care of my children for the days they had to stay in the NICU. Thank you for your service and good will.”

Christopher La Mendola, MD, Chairman of Cardiothroacic Surgery/Director of the St. Francis Hospital Open Heart Surgery Program at Good Samaritan

“Thank you Dr. La Mendola and all who helped me recover from my 4/19/16 surgery. You have enabled me to continue my relationship with mother nature. Thank you for making it possible for me to continue my gardening - and appreciate all that nature has to offer. Being close to nature is the best medicine of all. Most of all - thank you for giving me what all the money in the world can't buy - time!”

“Dr. La Mendola made me feel confident that I could come through my open heart surgery and give me many more years to help others and maintain my healthy lifestyle. Now I take care of myself first so I can help others. At age 80, I am fit as a fiddle and ready for anything.”

“I am not a person of many words, but its because of you and your team that I'm doing well today and just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Anthony Capizzi, MD, Associate Chairman of Surgery

“Every year when I visit your office for a breast exam, I am impressed by the professional staff and most importantly by your caring and devotion to your patients. I appreciate all you do!”

Larissa Fomitcheva, MD, Obstetrics/Gynecology

“I want to say big thanks to Dr. Larissa Fomitcheva, gynecologist, for her hard work. This person is an attentive, diligent specialist in her profession.”

Ezra Deutsch, MD, Cardiology

“I'm so grateful to have Dr. Deutsch as my doctor. He is an excellent physician. Dr. Deutsch always treated me with respect and he always explained procedures to me. He is kind, thoughtful, polite and I am proud to call him my "superhero" doctor. Keep up the good work, Dr. Deutsch! God Blass you and Good Samaritan Hospital.”

Borimir Darakchiev, MD, Neurosurgery

“On or about 7/1/14, I responded to Good Samaritan Hospital due to inability to speak, confusion and other afflictions. After surgery and 24 days of being unconcious, I ascertaine Dr. Darakchiev effected the surgery and removed a non cancerous tumor. On my first visit to Dr. Darakchiev I was informed that Dr. Darachiev ordered a body scan and that he was not satisfied with the results and was suspicious about my chest. After a pet scan and biopsy, it was confirmed I have thymic cancer. My primary point is that Dr. Darakchiev ordering a full body scan which I understand is not common or a standard practice revealed my cancer. Simply, but for Dr. Darakchiev I would not be alive today. Dr. Darakchiev's practice contrary to "standard" medical practive should be adopted. Office appointments were informative, polite and my questions answered. God Bless Dr. Darakchiev and please adopt his practive of body scans to ascertain if other problems exist beside the obvious. He saved my life both brain tumor removal and the scan that led to cancer diagnosis.”

Tyler Enders, DO

“I was so glad to receive this. I wanted to thank Dr. Enders but did not know how to go about it. I had a bicycle accident in Saltaire, Fire Island that resulted in being taken by ambulance to Good Sam Emergency. This was my first experience in my life in an ambulance and emergency. I sat in emergency waiting for the trauma orthopedic surgeon on staff for hours. At this time I was unaware my wrist was broken. I had a closed fracture of the distal end of the left radius. The P.A., Brittany Bongovi, was very attentive and sweet. She made me less scared and explained Dr. Enders was in surgery and as soon as he gets out he will see me. It was hours (5). Suddenly the certain drew open & Dr. Enders introduced himself. He explained I broke my wrist and he was going to avoid me surgery and set the bone. I was able to the outline of the mask on his face from his hours in surgery. I commented about how many hours he was in surgery and he replied humbly, "I'm going back after you". Dr. Enders proceeded in setting my bone, after a shot of morphine and did an incredible job! I wasn't out of the woods as the bone could still slip. Hence it did not and my wrist is 100% healed. If it wasn't for Dr. Enders on call that day, I feel I could have had surgery and problems for the rest of my life. I commend Dr. Enders - thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Hitender Jain, MD, Cardiology

“I've been truly blessed that Dr. Jain works for Good Samaritan Hospital and that he's my cardiologist. In 2012 he diagnosed that I should have an angiogram. He was right. There was a 95% blockage in one of my arteries. Dr. Lee performed angioplasty stent procedure. Dr. Jain is currently monitoring my palpatations with a heart monitor. I'm confident he will diagnose and treat my condition if needed. When Dr. Jain walks in the examination room, there's a calmness he has that keeps myself and my heart at ease. He provides a genuine concern. When I ask questions and when he does as well. He's never in a rush. Sometimes I forget to ask a question. He turns around, answers my question without being annoyed. Thank you so much for having Dr. Jain on your staff!”

Jerry Chin, MD, Family Medicine

“During my 14 day stay (12/21-1/3), these two doctors showed me how much concern they had for me and my health. Dr. Chin visited me every day with much concern of how I was doing. Dr. Gokarn was a new dr. whom I met under emergency circumstances. He explained that I needed an emergency surgery and that it was to be done immediately. He visited me several times. On one occasion he asked if I was given anything to eat. I responded "no". He was upset, left the room and came back with applesauce and juice. He even opened the container for me. I was overwhelmed because he not only reacted to an emergency situation being a professional doctor, but he was compassionate and concerned. After having a procedure 12/4/17 and then another on 12/22/17, and the emergency on 12/25, I also needed an IVC filter due to clots. I was ready to give up, signed a DNR, wanted hospice because I no longer wanted to suffer. Dr. Gokarn spoke to me and made me realize that I should not give up and that I should fight to continue living. In my eyes, he saved my life and I will eternally be grateful to him.”

Robert Carlin, MD, Pulmonary

“Thank you!”

Firas Bridges, MD, Surgery

“I am very grateful for all the TLC I received from doctors, nurses, aids, technicians and even cleaning personnel who greeted me each day with a smile and left me feeling hopeful. Dr. Bridges was able to remove a cancerous growth in my colon and did a perfect job. I am cancer free as of now. I have been lucky enough to celebrate my 96th birthday in November 2017 and am looking forward to my next. I thank God every day for all the caring people at Good Samaritan Hospital who took such good care of me. You are all my heroes.”

Barry Gruber, MD, Rheumatology

“Dr. Gruber has been monitoring me with Dr. Saraceno and Dr. Barbato as a team, since 2009. Dr. Gruber took a special interest in me because of my Wegener's Disease. He is very involved with the Cleveland Clinic and keeps updated and participates in studies on this disease through them. His office staff is well equiped to take care of my needs because he has an infusion area and bone scan area. He follows up on all the bloodwork reports and consults with the team, sharing his most recent knowledge. He actually introduced me to another patient of his, to help alleviate my fears before my kidney transplant. He is the man in charge and the "go to guy".”

Ralph Barbato, DO, Nephrology

“Dr. Barbato is an excellent nephrologist who has monitored me for several years. He knew exactly when to send me to Stony Brook Hospital for a kidney transplant. I did not have to go through dialysis because of his constant monitoring and insight. He explains everything to me in detail and even uses pictures and organ models to help me understand better. He spends a lot of time with each patient because they are all important to him. He is quick with a joke or story. But most of all he calls me "young fella" and I am older than him!”

Joseph Saraceno, DO, Pulmonary

“Dr. Saraceno became my doctor after Dr. Goldbin left the practice. At first, I was nervous with him because I have a complicated medical illness and did not know if he would understand it. He understands it very well and tries to do the best he can for me. He came to visit me in the hospital and also had his partners check up on me. I felt I was in very competent hands. He is easy going, listens to me, and explains things well. He reads and checks over the catscan reports before he even sees me in the office. He is the best!”

Pankaj Singhal, MD, Chairman of Obstetrics/Gynecology

“I realize that God is in the operating room. I am unafraid because I know God's loving presence fills this room, dedicated to the healing of mankind and hallowed by the many lives savied within its walls, with the aid of anesthetic, I will fearlessly relax and trust that I will be taken care of. I recognize the surgeons, nurses, and interns as agents of God's healing love for me. Their skilled minds and hands reflect the intelligence of God. Through God's wise direction and guidance, they are trained and ready, with only one thought prompting their actions while I am with them - to heal me! I thank God for being near, and I relax in his care. I realize that God is in the operating room. I will forever be grateful to the doctors and staff of D-unit.”

“God bless you all for your caring, understanding hearts.”

John Loscalzo, MD, Chief of Hematology and Oncology

“Thank you for treating our dad with such compassion. He is an amazing and humble man, and means the world to us. You have made him - and us - feel as though he is the only patient you have. Odds are - others feel the same. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”

Emily Gubert, MD, Obstetrics/Gynecology

“Thank you for all you do. I can only hope my son is part of the amazing team there as he awaits to hear for consideration to do rotations at Good Samaritan Hospital.”

Shahram Hormozi, MD, Cardiololgy

“Dr. Hormozi's work touches my life every day. Thank you entire Cardiology Department. P.S. Cardio Rehab too!”

William Disanti, MD, Gastroenterology
