Good Samaritan Teams with Cancer Services Program to Offer Free Breast Screenings

May 5th, 2017

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting a free mammography screening on Saturday, May 13, with appointments starting at 7:30 am for women between the ages of 40-64. The screening will be held at the Women’s Imaging Center located at 735 Montauk Highway in West Islip, in conjunction with Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Suffolk County and Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jacqueline A. Gordon.

According to Bonnie Edsall, MS, RN, CBCN, CN-BN, Breast Health Center/Radiation Oncology Nurse Manager, “This is a free service that is available to women without health insurance who might otherwise not have access to cancer screenings. By signing up with the Cancer Services Program, for which there is also no fee, they may be eligible for other life-saving screenings as well.”

Breast Surgeons from the Good Samaritan Hospital Breast Leadership Program will perform a clinical breast exam and write a prescription for the mammogram and CSP will enroll patients in their program. There are no income guidelines for eligibility. Women must be uninsured residents of Suffolk County. A photo identification is required at the time of the exam.

The Women’s Imaging Center is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence offering advanced screening, diagnostic tests and procedures. It was the first facility in Suffolk County with 3-D digital tomosynthesis to better detect abnormalities in dense breast tissue.

The Center earned a full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) which is administered by the American College of Surgeons Accreditation. The Accreditation is awarded only to those facilities voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and undergoing a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. Good Samaritan earned the highest scores on all standards and was recognized for offering a comprehensive patient-focused breast care program.
