Childbirth Education

The birth of your baby is one of the most exciting and joyful times in your life. At Good Samaritan, our Perinatal Education Classes are designed with you and your family in mind. Our experienced staff will work with you to help ensure the safest and most satisfying birth experience possible. We’ll explain the facts and options available in maternity care and answer all of your questions.

Our classes include instruction in:

  • Early Pregnancy and managing your changing body
  • Labor and delivery
  • Breathing techniques
  • Exercises
  • Cesarean births
  • Recovery
  • Grandparent classes
  • Emotional changes during pregnancy and after birth
  • Tour of the “Birthplace”
  • Parent classes
  • Infant feeding and care
  • Sibling classes, as well as classes in infant safety and CPR, and infant development and stimulation, are also offered.

"First Time Around" Prepared Childbirth (Lamaze) Course
Five 2-1/2 hour weekday evening classes or one, eight hour weekend superclass; $125 per couple
Good Samaritan's "First Time Around" childbirth course prepares expectant couples for the wondrous experience of childbirth.  Topics covered include stages of labor, common routines and procedures, pain relief options, the coach's role during labor and care of mom and baby.  Couples will also take a tour of the Maternity department and learn the Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques that will help them during their labor.

"Second Time Around" Labor Refresher (Lamaze) Class
One, 3-1/2 hour class; $60 per couple
This superclass helps mothers and their coaches reinforce the breathing, relaxation and labor support techniques they learned for their first birth.  Helpful methods for easing sibling rivalry will also be discussed.  "Second Time Around" Lamaze can help couples change what they did not like about their first birth experience and help make the birth of their next child an exhilarating moment of joy.

Early Pregnancy Class
One class; Free of charge
This class helps expectant couples learn how to manage their pregnancy and provides them with the knowledge to feel comfortable and secure with their new role in life.  Topics include fetal growth and development, body changes during pregnancy, common tests and procedures and prenatal nutrition and exercise. 

Caring for Your Baby Class
One, 2-1/2 hour class; $20 per couple
Helps expectant couples prepare for their new roles by providing important information on infant nutrition, health maintenance, common illnesses and “how to’s” of bathing, diapering and dressing. Couples will come away feeling prepared and confident in their ability to care for their new little “bundle of joy”.

Grandparents’ Class
One, 2 hour class; $20 per couple
Classes prepare new or expectant grandparents for their special role discussing current practices in childbirth, advances in infant nutrition and child care, how to baby-proof your home, child safety and more.  

Cesarean Birth Class (C- Section Class)
One, 2 hour class; Free of charge
This free class will prepare expectant couples for what to expect in the event of a planned or unplanned C/Section. This class is great for all couples, even those who are not anticipating a C/Section, to help prepare for the unexpected.

Get Acquainted Visit (Tour)
Free of charge
Come visit our state of the art birthing rooms and family-centered Mother- Baby Units.

“Breastfeeding Your Baby” Course 
One, 3 hour class; $30 per couple
This course provides practical information to guide the expectant couple toward a successful nursing experience.  Topics include positioning the baby, getting started, avoiding common problems and pumping and storing milk. New parents will leave with the confidence and information needed to successfully nurse their baby and get off to the right start.

New Mothers’ Support Group
Five, 1-1/2 hour classes; free of charge
New mothers and their babies meet for five weeks to socialize and discuss important topics of mutual interest such as adjusting to parenthood, infant growth and development, feeding and nutrition, sleep patterns and infant health and safety. This warm and caring environment allows mothers to find support and friendship and learn ways to care for themselves and their babies. 

Mother's Circle of Hope Support Group ( insert link for flyer of this group)
You are not alone. A free, 8-week support group meets once a week for women experiencing depression, anxiety or worried thoughts during pregnancy or after the birth of their baby. Led by trained professionals, this group is a safe place to share your feelings, meet other moms with similar experiences and learn the steps you can take to speed your recovery.

Infant Massage Classes
Four, 1-1/2 hour classes; held evenings and weekends; $50 for one person or $70 per couple. Includes massage oil.
This special course teaches moms and partners the soothing techniques of infant massage. Parents learn to relieve gas and colic, recognize and relieve tension and fussiness and foster a special way of closeness with their baby.                         

Big Brother/ Big Sister Class
One, 1-1/4 hour class; $20 per family
This wonderful class for children ages three and up helps older brothers and sisters to feel important and learn about their special role in the family.  Big brothers and sisters will learn how to be a “mother’s helper” and will be taught how a baby grows inside mommy, newborn safety and how to help diaper and hold a baby.  At the completion of the class, graduates will be taken on a tour to see where the moms and babies are and receive official Big Brother/Big Sister certificates.

Breast Pump Rentals
Do you want to pump and bottle feed or store your breastmilk? Hospital-grade breast pumps rented on a weekly or monthly basis. Professional, individual service and education on fitting and use provided by a health care professional.

Breastfeeding Café (Insert link to flyer for this group)
Bring your baby to this free weekly support group led by our Certified Lactation Consultant. In an informal, off-site location, participants meet other moms and receive information and support to help ensure breastfeeding success. Topics will vary based on group members’ interests.

TOTSAVER/ FIRST AID “Pediatric Heartsaver AED Program”
This 6- hour course includes book, materials, safe manequin practice and two- year course completion card; $50 per person/ $75 per couple

This course is sponsored by the Nursing Education Department and covers:
• Infant and Child CPR techniques (Ages Birth through 8)
• Relieving obstructed airway in an Infant and Child
• Accident prevention
• Household safety
