At 1,401 square miles, Long Island is the 11th largest island in the United States, and is home to several million residents year-round. It is geographically divided up into four regions: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. Although Brooklyn and Queens are technically located on Long Island, they are considered part of the five boroughs of New York City.
 
Nassau County is located on the western end of Long Island consisting of 2 cities (Long Beach and Glen Cove), 3 towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay) and within those three towns resides 64 villages. Suffolk County is much larger than Nassau County, covers more than half of Long Island, and is located on the central and eastern portion of Long Island. Suffolk consists of 10 towns (Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, Southampton and Southold) and 33 villages. Also within the borders of Suffolk County are two Indian reservations: The Shinnecock Reservation and Poospatuck Reservation.
