Because side effects are likely, a nurse will advise you on how to minimize them. Most patients do not experience serious diffi culties. Since every case is different, specific instructions may differ from those given to others. Do not assume your experience will be similar to another patient’s. Some side effects, such as fatigue (as the body heals itself, it uses substantial energy) and irritation of the skin are common. Remember that radiation is aimed and you should not experience symptoms in areas not being treated. We have included a section on general skin care in this booklet. When you begin treatment you will be given detailed instructions about skin care and diet. You should maintain good nutrition and eat well-balanced meals. Check with the radiation oncologist, nurse or therapist prior to using medications or ointments on the skin, even if prescribed by another physician.
