Catholic Health Services to Partner with Suffolk County for Second Annual Marathon and Freedom Fest 2016


As Suffolk County gears up to again partner with Catholic Health Services (CHS) – the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor - on the Second Annual Marathon and Freedom Fest 2016, volunteers including physicians, nurses, advanced practice professionals, physical and respiratory therapists and more are preparing to again assist as race medicine providers for the 26.2 mile race, the half marathon and 5K challenge.

The race, which will start and end in Patchogue Village, will take place at 8 am on Sunday, October 30 and is expected to draw runners from across the country and around the world. This year, the 5K challenge was added to attract additional runners of all abilities.

Some 3,500 runners participated in last year’s marathon raising approximately $160,000 to support local veteran’s services. The funds were distributed to 19 organizations that provide services for Suffolk County Veterans.

To encourage even more people to take part so that additional funds will be raised to help the growing number of service men and women who need assistance, teams of 30 or more receive a 10% discount on registration.

Catholic Health Services President and CEO Alan Guerci, MD, said “To help care for the thousands of runners and participants who cheer on their friends and families, clinicians from across CHS will partner with Progressive Emergency Physicians and Hunter Ambulance at each of the first aid tents and the field hospital. That includes staff from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, St. Charles Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Maryhaven, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home and Good Samaritan Nursing Home.”

The Freedom Fest Taste of Long Island Festival will begin at 9 am in the heart of downtown Patchogue just as the half marathoners are crossing the finish line. There will be live music and entertainment, free tastings from local wineries and food producers providing an assortment of delicacies.

There will also be a virtual run for those unable to attend but who would like to support our veterans. They can complete the marathon, half marathon or 5K at a time that is convenient and receive the same registration packet that contains a finisher’s medal and commemorative 2nd Annual CHS Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon Support Our Veteran T-shirt. They will not be eligible in the competitive awards categories.

Race packets are available for pick up at the Sports and Fitness Expo that will be held at the Patchogue Family YMCA at 255 West Main Street in Patchogue on Friday, October 28 from 3 to 8 pm and Saturday, October 29, from 10 am to 3 pm. The Expo is free and open to the public and residents, spectators, runners and their family and friends are invited to visit and see the many services and products that are offered. Registered runners MUST pick up their race packets to secure their numbers and timing chips.
