Breast Cancer Help, Inc., Provides Scholarships to High School Seniors

Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation board member Henry Schreiber, Jr., Chairman of Breast Cancer Help, Inc., presented $2,000 scholarships to West Islip High School seniors Paige Bourous and Danny Doherty. The Lorraine Pace Scholarships are awarded to students whose lives have been touched by a breast cancer diagnosis. After supporting a family member through cancer, both students are determined to make a difference in the lives of others facing the disease.

The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation aligned with Breast Cancer Help, Inc. to provide outreach, education and programs for those dealing with cancer at the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore. Through a series of free non-medical services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

This past October, Paige formed a team for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and raised more than $10,000 for breast cancer research in honor of her mother, Karen, who had just lost her battle with the disease. This experience has made Paige determined to work toward finding a cure for breast cancer, and she is enrolled in Stony Brook University’s Physician Assistant Program. “I do not want breast cancer to define my life,” said Paige. “As my mother always encouraged, I am going to seize every opportunity to make a difference in the world.”

In addition to working hard to overcome his own health challenges, Danny has grown strong as a result of his mother’s breast cancer. “I was influenced by her determination and positive outlook and this taught me to never give up,” said Danny. “With everything my mom has gone through receiving this incredible honor makes everything seem a little better.”
