About Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, is a 537-bed (including 100 nursing home beds), not-for-profit hospital serving the community on the south shore of Long Island in West Islip, New York. A premier health care facility, Good Samaritan’s high-quality medical services extend across the continuum of care to all disciplines, both for inpatients and outpatients.  In 2009, Good Samaritan signed an affiliation agreement with The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, enhancing the quality health care it has come to be known for.

A stellar reputation exists for Good Samaritan’s first-rate oncology, cardiology, respiratory and surgical care, which are complemented by an array of state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging capabilities that includes a Positron Emmisson Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanner and a 64-Slice CT scanner. The number of visits to the Emergency Department will again surpass 100,000 this year, exceeding all other facilities in Suffolk County. The Ambulatory Surgery Department, where patients have same day procedures, continues to treat an average of almost 300 patients each week. In 2009, 30,170 patients were admitted for inpatient services.

Additionally, services for women are available in obstetrics, gynecology and maternal/child care as well as diagnostic imaging for cancer screening and treatment. Pediatric patients are treated in the Pediatric Emergency Department and, if necessary, admitted to the Pediatric Unit or the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Pediatric sub-specialists are available around the clock to support these medical services.

Rehabilitation services, which now includes physical, occupational and speech therapies, moved into expanded area in 2008. The Department added a Pediatric Physical and Occupational Therapy Program, Adult and Pediatric Speech Therapy Services and also a specific program for cancer patients suffering from fatigue.

The need for expert cardiology care has steadily increased in the community. The cardiology team has responded by being one of the few community hospitals in New York state to perform primary angioplasty on an elective basis. The angioplasty program is a collaborative effort among the Medical Center’s cardiology, emergency and special care departments.

The talented medical staff of 830 physicians, 1,200 nurses and more than 2,000 support staff is committed to offering the best in diagnostic, treatment and prevention of conditions and illnesses. Care is administered for the individual’s physical needs while always addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of every patient.
