Physician of the Quarter for March 2008

Do you know a Good Samaritan physician who should be recognized for his/her outstanding service and support to his/her patients? Has his/her compassion and comfort touched you or someone you know? Good Samaritan would like you to nominate a doctor affiliated with the hospital who encompasses these qualities for its Physician of the Quarter program.

The previous winner, Sal Giantinoto, M.D., was nominated by his patients, Susan and Steven Dorn of West Islip, for understanding “what ‘family practice’ is all about. He cares about the patient, but even sometimes more important about the care giver too.” Dr. Giantinoto was presented with a plaque at the hospital’s medical staff meeting and Susan and Steven, as the nominators, received a check for $50.

Throughout the year, the hospital will recognize its physicians who have gone above and beyond to help his or her patients. Good Sam will be accepting letters of nominations no longer than 300 words, from patients wishing to nominate their physicians. Please include specific examples of how they exceed their normal duties. The patient selected and his/her doctor will be invited to a special ceremony and have their story displayed in Good News From Good Sam and on the hospital’s website. Winning physicians will receive a certificate and the nominating patient will receive $50. Letters should be typed or printed legibly and contain your name, address and phone number. Winners will be contacted by phone.

Nominations can be mailed to:

Good Sam Emergency Department Receives Grant from Senator Johnson

(West Islip, NY) - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was recently the recipient of a $175,000 grant secured by Senator Owen Johnson.

Designated by the State as an Area Trauma Center, Good Samaritan is the busiest on Long Island, with almost 91,000 emergency department visits in 2007. The Medical Center requested the assistance of Senator Johnson to secure funding for equipment that would improve diagnostic, trauma and cardiac services in the Emergency Department (ED). The grant funding is unique, in that the equipment it helped purchase includes both diagnostic and life-saving devices.

A state-of-the-art portable ultrasound machine, Biphasic defibrillators and an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and multiple portable multi-function monitors were recently secured, thanks to the Senator.

The portable ultrasound machine enables ED physicians to perform immediate diagnostic studies within the department, on trauma and other patients in pain. Many injuries and conditions can be discovered during an initial exam by achieving rapid ultrasound screening examinations.

AEDs have been placed in areas of the ED available to the public. It allows immediate access to resuscitative equipment in areas outside of the emergency treatment area.

State-of-the-art, multi-function portable vital signs monitoring equipment has been strategically deployed throughout the ED. This equipment is capable of monitoring vital signs, including: pulse, blood pressure and percentage of oxygen in the blood.

The acquisition of this state-of-the-art equipment allows the ED to continue to provide prompt, complex assessment and definitive care for the ever-increasing volume.

March is Save Your Vision Month

Imagine struggling to see the numbers on a clock, or the letters on a sign, or the cars coming down the road. Think how discouraging it would be if you got a headache every time you read, or did homework, or tried to see an assignment on the blackboard. For a student to learn, he or she must be able to see.

Eighty-percent of learning is through the visual sense. One out of four children has a vision problem, yet only one out of seven children has had an eye examination before starting school. Only one out of two teenagers has an eye examination by high school graduation. Each year the month of March is dedicated to raising Americans’ awareness of the importance of regular eye care. Eye specialists encourage individuals to consider eye and vision care an integral part of their regular health care routines before print gets blurry or a problem develops.

According to eye physicians, 90% of eye injuries can be prevented. The biggest mistake people make in terms of eye health is not wearing eye protection, including safety glasses, sunglasses and protection for sports. Eye diseases and other health problems can also cause vision loss. Routine exams are essential in early detection of eye problems and ensuring overall eye health. Diabetes and hypertension both affect the blood vessels in the eyes and can cause damage to the retina. Diabetes is also the largest cause of vision impairment or loss in the elderly. It is important to be aware of family history of eye diseases and to inform your optometrist or ophthalmologist of any vision problems or medical conditions you have.

For more information, find an ophthalmologist near you or to schedule an appointment for a glaucoma screening at Good Samaritan, please call (631) 376-4444.
