Introduction Fourth-year medical student electives in emergency medicine are available to students year round. An elective in Emergency Medicine may be arranged by contacting the Department of Medical Education at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center (631/376-4163). The total number of students doing an elective at a given time is intentionally restricted to avoid diluting the educational experience of all rotators. Complementary housing is available on a first-come-first served basis, and is also arranged through the Department of Medical Education. Good Samaritan is a major affiliate and teaching campus for the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM). We offer third- and fourth-year medical student rotations in multiple other specialties. The emergency medicine rotation is structured so students become an integral part of the rotation and of the ED team. Our emergency medicine faculty and residents are energetic and highly motivated to promote EM and ensure an educational and rewarding rotation. Students are responsible for the complete care and management of their assigned patients from initial work-up through disposition. Students have plenty of opportunity to practice basic procedures and many have successfully performed more invasive or emergent procedures. Students always work under the supervision of the ED attending and a senior resident if assigned to the same team. Scheduling Averages: four 12-hour shifts per week Efforts are made to honor all special scheduling requests, within the guidelines of the schedule Academic Opportunities Core Reading Material: Topics reflect the fundamentals of emergency medicine. During the final week of the rotation, students sit for an exit exam and evaluation. Wednesday Educational Conference: All rotators are required to attend and participate. Walking / Sign-out rounds: At 7am and 7pm, formal bedside rounds are made as the ED teams change shift. This gives the ED attending and residents the opportunity to “hand off” their patients to the next team. Students are expected to actively participate when learning points related to the patient caseload are discussed. Morning Conference: On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, when on shift, rotators attend case presentation conference, and have an opportunity to present one case during their rotation. Specialty Workshops: Every Tuesday we present a hands-on session directed towards teaching students the fundamental skills of one of the following areas: suturing, splinting, and EKG and radiograph interpretation. Noon Conference: Daily, when on shift, from 12noon – 1pm is an educational conference for all students rotating through Good Sam. Evaluation In addition to our evaluation of the student’s performance on their rotation, students likewise have the opportunity to evaluate their rotation experience.
