About the Residency - Family Medicine

The Family Practice Residency program at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is a two-year academic program, which follows the successful completion of a special-emphasis or rotating internship. The residency encompasses all aspects of training necessary to produce proficient Family Practitioners proficient in treating the diverse patient population of the region. Structured rotations in Family Practice continuity clinics, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Surgery and various electives provide the residents with a full compliment of clinical experiences.

Integral to the training program is the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Health Center. Here, as well as on other rotations, resident physicians work closely with attendings to ensure exposure to the full breathe of the training experience. Throughout their training, residents establish and follow a patient base of their own ensuring true continuity-of-care.

Journal clubs, case presentations, guest lecturers, and patient rounds supplemented by additional formal and informal teaching ensure the resident a full compliment of academic opportunities.

By the completion of the PGY-3 Family Practice year all residents must have completed a paper of publishable quality based upon their own research.

Senior residents have the additional role of providing instruction and guidance to interns and students. This develops a stabilizing force, which is imperative to the productive and successful learning process of both resident and student.
