How Is Radiation Therapy Given?

Forms of radiation include teletherapy, which is external, and brachytherapy, which is internal. The most common type of radiation is teletherapy. It consists of photons and electrons. Each type of radiation is produced by a different piece of equipment, but all are used to destroy abnormal cells, while sparing healthy surrounding tissue. Treatments at Good Samaritan are given with photon and electron beams generated by machines called linear accelerators, which are located in specially shielded rooms. In addition, high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, trans-perineal seed implant (TPI)treatments and stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) treatments are available.
